Some Thoughts About Our Legislature and The Legislative Session.

It’s hard to believe, but the 2019 legislative session will be here before we know it. As we head into Christmastime, we should remember to thank our local legislators, our Mississippi House and Senate members. Right now they are balancing the holidays with preparing to spend three months or more in Jackson, representing you and your interests. Serving in the legislature is a tough job; it really is pure public service. I am thankful for the good men and women who willingly serve there and glad to be able to call (most of) them my friends. These folks sacrifice their personal time and convenience every January through March or April to serve the people of Mississippi in Jackson. For many years I had the great honor of serving in the Mississippi Legislature, standing at this podium and participating in the debate, and I learned the difficult process of lawmaking and conservative budgeting in the Mississippi Legislature.

As your Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce, I’ll continue to have a role in monitoring and supporting various pieces of ag and commerce related legislation that impacts our Mississippi farmers, ranchers and landowners. As we approach the Session, feel free to communicate with me about any legislative issues you are aware of, and I will be glad to help anyway that I can.

And let me take this opportunity to publicly say “thank you” to all our Mississippi lawmakers. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and I’ll see y’all at the Capitol!
